Jalāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī – known by most as just Rumi – was a Persian poet and Sufi mystic who lived during the 13th century. At the age of 24, he succeeded his father as a professor in religious sciences. His introduction to the mystical path of Islam (Sufism) came by way of Shams of Tabriz. Their deep relationship and Shams' disappearance and death became the source of much of Rumi's inspiration. His search for Shams (the "beloved") ultimately became his search for the divine. Rumi's funeral lasted 40 days and was attended by Muslims, Jews, Persians, Christians and Greeks. Upon his death, his followers founded the Mawlawi Sufi order, known also as the Whirling Dervishes.
